Country rapper Lil Nas X may be whipping his Porsche down old town road soon enough.
Last week his song “Old Town Road,” which rose to national attention after being shunned by Billboard’s Country Music charts, jumped from No. 15 to No. 1 on the “Hot 100” list. Now, Billboard reports that Lil Nas X’s hip-hop hoedown has broken the streaming record once held by Drake’s “In My Feelings.”
Drake’s viral sensation set the bar during the week of July 28, 2018, with 116.2 million streams. Combining Lil Nas X’s original debut, along with a remix featuring pop-country forefather Billy Ray Cyrus, the track now has a record-breaking 143 million listens in the United States and counting, according to Nielsen Music.
Some may see Lil Nas X’s foray into country rap as a goofy stunt inspired by the app TikTok, but he could be one of the savviest young rappers in the industry right now. In spite of Drake’s reign over radio and streaming, the massive country music market has remained largely untapped by hip-hop, and vice versa. A 2018 CBS News Poll revealed that country music is America’s favorite genre, taking 21% of the share; R&B or soul and hip-hop took only 9 and 7%, respectively.
