Los Angeles Angels pitcher Jake Jewell suffered what appeared to be a serious ankle injury while covering home plate after a wild pitch against the Boston Red Sox on Wednesday night.
While on the mound in the eighth inning, Jewell unleashed a wild pitch to Red Sox batter Mitch Moreland. J.D. Martinez, who was on third base, ran for home while Angels catcher Martin Maldonado fielded the ball and threw it to Jewell, who ran to cover the base. Jewell slipped while covering home plate and his right foot got twisted awkwardly under him. He was then carted off the field.
Jewell, who was recalled from the Triple-A Salt Lake Bees on Wednesday, was making just his third career major-league appearance.
He’s getting evaluated, I think, at Massachusetts General,” Angels manager Mike Scioscia said. “Hopefully we’ll get an idea of what’s happening sometime tonight.”
The Red Sox went on to win the game, 9-6.
